Juliet Sorensen served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for nearly seven years, successfully prosecuting several high-profile cases. She tackled multiple criminal cases, ranging from mortgage fraud and public corruption to embezzlement and firearms trafficking.
One of the most notable cases was Operation Crooked Code, an inter-agency investigation of bribery at the City of Chicago Departments of Buildings and Zoning. Juliet Sorensen was the lead prosecutor on the case. The investigation was a joint effort of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI, and the City of Chicago Inspector General's Office. A total of 15 of the dozens of officials involved were arrested on bribery charges in May 2008. These people, who included developers, contractors and building inspectors, were involved with exchanging cash and other benefits in return for various Chicago permits and city services.
Juliet Sorensen also successfully prosecuted Jean-Marie Vianney Mudahinyuka, a perpetrator of the Rwandan genocide, on charges of immigration fraud and assault on federal officers. Mudahinyuka, alias "Zuzu," was arrested following a tip from Rwandan nationals living in the Chicago area who had recognized him as having been a militia leader responsible for the deaths of thousands of people during the genocide.
Prior to becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Juliet Sorensen spent two years as a litigation associate at Foley Hoag LLP in Boston, Massachusetts. She also spent one year as a law clerk for the Honorable George A. O’Toole, Jr. Juliet Sorensen graduated cum laude from Princeton University and as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar from Columbia Law School.
Currently, Juliet Sorensen resides in Chicago and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law at the Northwestern University School of Law and at the Kellogg School of Management, teaching and researching in the area of international criminal law, corruption, and health and human rights.
